Pulling the Bigon Over Our Eyes

On April 1, 1996, Discover Magazine reported that physicists had mistakenly found a new particle, which they named Bigon. Discovered by accident (when a computer connected to a vacuum-tube experiment exploded), the particle materialized only for a few millionths of a second, but it was the size of a bowling ball. Physicist Albert Manque went on to explain that he thought Bigon might be responsible for such unexplained phenomena as ball lightning, earthquakes, migraines, spontaneous human combustion, and the unexplained failures of equipment and souffles, and perhaps even the collapse of the walls of Jericho. Despite the dateline of the article and the last paragraph just about letting everyone in on the joke, the magazine received huge amounts of mail in response to the story.
